Area Amenities

We understand hunting isn't for everyone, but that's no reason why your significant other, family members, or friends can't accompany you on your hunting getaway. The greater Syracuse area offers a wide variety of attractions and activities - great shopping, fabulous restaurants, sightseeing tours, world-class theaters, galleries and museums, and a lively night scene.

To help you plan your trip, we've pulled together a list of some of the high points, as well as provided useful links for more detailed information.

To get you started, take a street level tour of the city.

The City of Syracuse

Armory Square, Syracuse NY

The city of Syracuse is located in Onondaga County, an area of gently rolling hills, flat plains, lakes and streams. The city has been called the Crossroads of New York State due to its central location. Bordered by Lake Ontario to the north, the Finger Lakes to the southwest, and Oneida Lake to the northeast, it sits at the intersection of the state's two major interstate routes and serves as a major transportation and distribution center.

Two great resources for local news, information, and events for the Syracuse area are Syracuse.com and Hello Syracuse.

Cultural Venues and Attractions

The Open Hand Theater

Located in the heart of downtown Syracuse, Armory Square is the social and business center of Syracuse. Horse-drawn trolley tours, free parking, and Saturday afternoon teas are among some of the monthly promotional events. The square boasts a number of boutiques and specialty shops, a wide array of gourmet and ethnic restaurants and neighborhood pubs and cafes, and nightclubs, theaters, and museums. If you can't find what you're looking for here, you can't find it in Central New York.

Syracuse offers a number of stage plays and performing arts at venues such as The Landmark Theater and Syracuse Stage, Central New York's premier professional theater.

In the culturally diverse North Side Neighborhood, you'll find the fanciful red brick castle that houses The Open Hand Theater and International Mask and Puppet Museum, a must-see attraction for children of all ages.

The Oncenter Complex features a Convention Center, War Memorial Arena, and Civic Center Theaters, and hosts a variety of events throughout the year.

Emerson Museum of Art

The M.O.S.T (Museum of Science and Technology) provides hours of entertaining and educational exhibits.

Art lovers won't want to miss the Warehouse Gallery, an international contemporary art center, and the Emerson Museum of Art, a sculptural, Art Deco work of art in itself, featuring 11,000 pieces of American art, including one of the largest holdings of American ceramics in the nation.

Delavan Art Gallery offers an exhibition and sales venue for Central New York area artists.

If you're a jazz aficionado, you'll want to check out Jazz Central, a newly-renovated space that features a music library and 63 to 90 seat theater space that plays host to a variety of jazz-related seminars, jam sessions, rehearsals, and artist-sponsored performances.
